Tip 'n' DivideCalculator

How to tip and split a bill

Start with the amount on the final bill, after discounts and including tax and service charges. Add only the new voluntary tip you choose. This calculator divides the final payment equally; it does not assign individual orders.

Tax: choose what to tip on

A bill is USD 108.00, including USD 8.00 tax. At 15%, tipping on the full bill adds USD 16.20: three people pay USD 41.40 each. To tip on USD 100.00 before tax instead, choose Change tip base and enter 100. The new tip is USD 15.00, and three people pay USD 41.00 each.

Discounts: the bill and tip base can differ

For a final discounted bill of USD 105.84, a 15% tip on a chosen base of USD 80.00 is USD 12.00. The total is USD 117.84. A base of USD 100.00 gives a USD 15.00 tip and USD 120.84 total; a base of USD 87.84 gives a USD 13.18 tip and USD 119.02 total. Choose the base you intend to use; the tool does not infer what a discount covered.

Check service charges already on the bill

A USD 126.00 bill includes a service charge. With a new tip of 0%, three people pay USD 42.00 each. If you choose an additional 15% on a USD 100.00 base, the new tip is USD 15.00 and three people pay USD 47.00 each. Read the bill and ask the venue what its charge covers before choosing an extra tip.

For US federal tax purposes, the IRS distinguishes voluntary tips from compulsory service charges. That distinction does not tell you whether to add another tip or how a particular venue distributes a charge. Tipping customs also vary: the Emily Post Institute's general tipping guide is a US etiquette reference, not a rule built into this calculator.

Why two people may pay different amounts

A USD 100.00 bill plus a 15% tip totals USD 115.00. Split three ways, two people pay USD 38.33 and one pays USD 38.34. The group chooses who pays that extra cent. The payments add up to USD 115.00; the extra cent is not an additional tip.

The calculation

The new tip is the chosen tip base multiplied by the percentage, rounded once to the nearest cent. An exact half-cent rounds up: a 5% tip on USD 0.10 becomes USD 0.01. We add the rounded tip to the bill, divide into whole cents, and allocate the remaining cents one per person.

In exact integer units: tip cents = floor((base cents × percentage hundredths + 5000) / 10000). Total cents = bill cents + tip cents. Divide total cents by the number of people; any remainder determines how many people pay one cent more.

USD, EUR and GBP change the displayed currency code; they do not convert amounts. The calculator accepts amounts from 0 to 999999999.99, percentages from 0 to 1000, and 1–100 people. The percentage limit is a calculation boundary, not tipping advice. This tool does not apply cash rounding, split unequal orders, or subtract gift cards and advance payments.
